Gail and Sandra Stewart unfurl a Big Worm Cystic Fibrosis Life Foundation T-shirt on Uhuru Peak -- the highest point in Africa!
The sisters faced numerous challenges on the ten day hiking adventure including extreme altitudes, freezing temperatures and blizzard conditions. However, they had one goal; summit Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft) and raise money for the Big Worm Cystic Fibrosis Life Foundation. The two began the journey on February 7th, 2011 with two others hikers, two guides and 27 porters. Day 1, Gail and Sandra hike six hours to arrive at Shira 2 Camp (12,795 ft). Day 2, Gail wakes with a bad head cold and by the next day both sisters develop a dry, hacking cough...known as the "Kili Cough." Day 3, the sisters begin a daily regimen of Diamox (to combat high altitude sickness), B-12, Aleve, Ibruprofen and Emergen-C, Endurox and Hammer. Day 4, the group reaches Second Cave Camp and spend the night. Day 5, the sisters hike for more than 7 hours to reach Kikelewa Caves Camp (11,810 ft). Day 6, after another full day of hiking, the sisters reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp and spend the night at the base of majestic Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro's second highest volcano (14,210 ft). Day 6, they hike for 8 hours reaching School Hut Camp (16,200 ft). Day 7, after hiking 13 hours, the group reaches the summit of Africa's highest point --- Uhuru Peak! After some tears and a brief celebration, they honor Mathew Joyce and all CF sufferers by breathing as deeply as they can at 19,340 feet! From the Peak, they hike down into Crater Camp to spend the night next to the vertical walls of the Furtwangler Glacier (18,800 ft). Day 8, they wake up the next morning to -7 degree temperatures and blizzard conditions. At 6:00am the group sets out in blinding snow. Shortly after leaving camp the trip takes a critical turn when one member of the hiking party develops beginning stages of the potentially fatal condition...Pulmonary Edema...and porters rush the hiker down the mountain where her condition improves. The sisters and crew continue to trudge through a foot and half of snow making their way up and out of the crater and back down the mountain. Day 9 and 10, a blur of lower elevation ecstasy! Finally, after ten triumphant days hiking the entire circumference of the world's highest free standing mountain and summiting her peak, the sisters leave the Kilimanjaro National Park praying their trek has raised money and awareness and has made a small difference in the lives of CF sufferers.

Pranayam is a family yoga event dedicated to providing one-on-one yoga instruction to people living with Cystic Fibrosis and their families in a safe, fun, and inspiring environment. Studies have shown that yoga is an ideal form of movement for a person living with CF - strengthing vital core muscles, opening airways, and reducing stress and anxiety. For this reason, western medicine has recently turned to yoga to help adults and children cope with a variety of chronic illnesses.
